HEADMASTER
One day in 2019 a young man, one of my ESE students, arrived to class after being absent seven of the last 10 days. I asked him if "he was ok" and “where had he been?” He replied, “Coach I’m good, I’ve been laying tile with my dad and my uncle.” As I prepared myself to explain to him, how important it was for him to attend school regularly and earn his high school diploma, I stopped myself in mid-thought.
At that moment, I realized that this young man was working a job that he would probably be working for the rest of his life, and over the next three years, he would learn and master his trade in hopes of having a successful adulthood.
I was about to convince this young man to stop working and attend school, when I realized, over the next three years we were going to destroy his self esteem by telling him, “You're not going to graduate because you cannot pass the Algebra EOC exam nor the FSA.” Only to allow him to graduate once he attempted the tests twice.
I left that conversation knowing that this was not how I wanted to educate our leaders of tomorrow. I developed the concept for our school of C.O.E. Academy. “Provide an educational environment that students can grow into productive, successful young men, learn a trade, while earning their high school diploma.”
